200,000 Jobs Added to U.S. Economy in January
Leading actuary employment and career site Actuary.com comments on general employment trends from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics’ Economic Situation Report

The US economy added 200,000 jobs in January, according to preliminary numbers released by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics’ Economic Situation Report released on Friday, February 2, 2018.
“Employment gains increased by 40,000 in January, up 40 percent from December’s employment gain of 140,000 jobs,” said Jay Rollins, owner of Actuary.com, a leading career website specializing in actuary job postings. “Comparatively, employment dropped from January 2017 when gains were recorded at 256,000 jobs.”
Unemployment in January remained at 4.1 percent for the fourth consecutive month, while the number of unemployed persons reached 6.7 million. Job gains for the month occurred in construction, food services and drinking places, health care, and manufacturing.
Construction added 36,000 jobs in January, while food services and drinking places and health care added 31,000 and 21,000 jobs, respectively. Manufacturing added 15,000 jobs.
Employment in mining, wholesale trade, retail trade, transportation and warehousing, information, financial activities, professional and business services, and government changed little from December to January.
Total nonfarm payroll employment for November was revised down from +252,000 to +216,000, while payroll for December was revised up from +148,000 to +160,000. With these revisions, employment gains in November and December combined were 24,000 less than previously reported.
